Shockwave Therapy for Tendon Pain Relief

Do you have plantar fasiosis, achillies pain, hip tendon pain, rotator cuff shoulder pain or tennis elbow?

Has it been there for some time with no improvement?

Shockwave is for you.

What does Shockwave Therapy Treat?
There is good scientific evidence that Shockwave Therapy brings significant reductions in pain and improvements in function with all of the following conditions:

  • Feet – heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, achilles tendinopathy mid substance and insertional
  • Elbow – tennis and golfers elbow
  • Shoulder – calcific tendinosis of rotator cuff pain
  • Knee – patellar tendonosis or jumpers knee
  • Hip – trochanteric bursitis and Gluteus Medius tendinopathy
  • Shin splints or medial tibial stress syndrome
  • Iliotibial band friction syndrome
  • Proximal hamstring tendinopathies

How does Shock Wave Therapy work?

Shockwaves are high-intensity sound waves which interact with Cells of a damaged tendon. The cells sense the mechanical stimulation and stimulate cells to repair tissue and turn the tissue towards its pre injury state.

It also relaxes the tightness of muscles and the pain associated with it.

Generally these tendons we use shock wave on have a slower metabolism, altered cell make up and poorer blood supply so heal a lot slower.

Shockwave Therapy creates an optimal healing environment by causing stimulation of these listed biological effects, basically shockwave treatment can help trigger your biology to start to heal the affected tissue

What can I expect in a Shockwave treatment session?
Each treatment session lasts approximately 5 – 10 minutes where the physiotherapist will apply the shockwave to the target area. This involves positioning the shockwave head onto the injured area to allow the unit to gently and extensively transmit shock waves to that region. The feedback you provide helps the physiotherapist adjust the intensity of the treatment.
There may be some discomfort but we always reduce the intensity to a level that you can find mildly uncomfortable. Some people love it and ask for us to increase the intensity!
Are there any side effects or contraindications?
Shockwave is incredibly safe however we can not use it on children, pregnant women or if you have osteoporosis or if you have metal implants.
How many treatments do I need to improve my condition?
Generally, patients require 4 separate treatment sessions approximately 5 days to 1 week apart to complete a course of treatment. If a patient is not finding significant improvements after 3 visits it will not be effective and no more sessions are recommended.
